Blog Author: Elizabeth Mount, Intern Counselor It’s that time of year where the days get shorter, and the nights start earlier. This time of year, self-care is not only important but an essential part of mental health and maintaining a work, life, fun balance. Self-care is about making the time to rejuvenate yourself and helps prevent burnout and stress from imploding. Life gets busy and self-care is often the first thing that gets pushed to the side, therefore it is so important to schedule and make it a priority. Self-care looks different for everyone. This could mean setting a weekly night for curling up and watching your favorite Netflix show, going out to dinner with friends, a yoga class, meal prepping for the week, or going to therapy. It should also include little ways to get back on track when you find yourself starting to feel stressed, like taking deep breaths, journaling, sitting in the car listening to your favorite song for 5 minutes, or trying a grounding technique like: Exercise is great way to prevent and relieve stress, start small by taking a walk outside or doing a 10-minute video on YouTube. The biggest part is making yourself a priority, you know the saying you can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself leads to positive ripples effects for all other areas such as mental and physical health, stronger relationships, and increased life satisfaction. You are important, make yourself a priority!
