Heather Law is a Licensed Certified Social Worker that specializes in working with Veterans and other service members and their families, couples, individuals, and adolescents. Her integrative approach with clients includes person-centered and strength-based theory to foster healing and bring focus to relationships in her client’s lives. Using this perspective, she assists clients on a cognitive behavioral level to work on changes in action and to address their cognitions and underlying emotions. Heather believes in a nurturing, direct relationship with clients. She patiently—throughout the process of treatment—provides a safe and secure relationship with which clients so they can process their vulnerabilities.
Heather’s educational background includes a Master of Social Work in Advanced Generalist Practice, a bachelors of science in psychology with a sociology minor, and an associate degree in medical assisting. Her military background as an active-duty combat medic in the Army, followed by service in the Army Reserves gives her an inside and uniquely military-focused perspective to integrate with the therapeutic process when working with military clientele.
After transitioning to the mental health field, Heather served Veterans, service members, and their families in multiple roles within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Vet Center, and non-profit Veteran’s service sectors. She provided: therapeutic services for individuals, groups, families, and bereavement; military sexual trauma (MST) counseling; and community outreach and education. She provided: homelessness and transitional housing and services; substance abuse assessment; and other VA service referrals. Heather provided services for Veterans that have neurocognitive disorders and/or serious mental disorders with problematic behavioral symptoms within the VA hospital. She co-facilitated an MST group therapy program for women Veterans and created her own PTSD coping skills therapy group for Veterans using an integrative mindfulness-based ecotherapy platform in collaboration with the Vet Center.
More recently Heather worked in private practice therapy where she provided services in respects to sexual health, LGBTQ+, trauma/PTSD, couples/marital, individuals and children/adolescents counseling.
Her credentials and specialized training include: Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) in New Jersey and South Dakota; Department of Social Services Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP); training in Mental Health First Aid and Mindfulness-based Ecotherapy.
Her professional affiliations include: Early Career Professional Member, American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT); Member, American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress.
