Your First Therapy Session

Your first therapy session may feel scary. It may feel like something completely out of your element, and that is okay. This post is here to guide you through the process. My hope is to make the process less intimidating. Your first session in the therapy space will be your intake. The intake is meant to help the provider get to know you to provide the best care possible. There are questions involved, such as sharing what brings you in? How long has the problem persisted? But in reality, the intake is the base foundation of the therapeutic relationship. Every therapist has to do intakes, but every therapist may choose to do them a little bit differently. I personally have gotten into the habit of trying to understand you, the client where they are, and helping you feel as comfortable with their therapist as possible. Asking for help is a massive step in creating a more positive life. I want to see your perspective. I want to hear your story. It is not about asking robotic questions like do you have any history of substance use? Or what was your family dynamics like? Eventually, that all comes out later when, and if you are ready to share. These are your sessions. You should not feel pressured with any therapy experience. Our staff wants you to feel safe and comfortable in the therapy space. Speaking of sharing, Everything that is said in the space is confidential!

I personally try to build the relationship as I am human, you are human, let's have a human conversation. I really want all my clients personally to know that therapy at times is very difficult and very challenging, but I also want them to know that at the end of the day, it is just two people connecting. This is true if you are seeing myself or any of our fantastic providers! It is about being human and supporting other humans through whatever brings them to us. I hope this helps anyone who is looking into therapy as a whole and The Mental Mediator. Our supportive staff is with you on your journey from start to finish. We want to see you thrive!
